Significance

The authors report a procedure for the hydrogenation of enol phosphinates under iridium catalysis. This reaction generates useful chiral phosphinate products that can be subsequently converted into the enantioenriched alcohols or phosphines. A variety of P,N-ligands were tested in the iridium system, with complex 1 giving the best results. Very high ee values are obtained for a large scope of enol phosphinates. A pressure of 30 bar H2 is needed for high conversion.
