Poly(4-vinylpyridine)-Supported Ru-Salen Catalyst for the Olefination of Aldehydes

Significance

A Ru-salen catalyst anchored on poly(4-vinylpyridine) for the olefination of aldehydes was developed. The poly(4-vinylpyridine)-supported Ru-salen catalyst (P4VP) was prepared from poly(4-vinylpyridine) and [Ru] 1. The olefination of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde with diazoethylacetate (EDA) was carried out with P4VP and PPh3 to give ethyl 4-nitrocinnamate in 96% yield (cis/trans = 1:99). The olefination of various aldehydes with EDA by using P4VP was also demonstrated (6 examples, 12-96% yield).
