Gamma Nail Surgical Revision after 15 Years of Experience: Results

Abstract

A pertrochanteric fracture is the most frequent fracture of senior citizens and, due to the mean life expectancy increase, it represents a continuously increasing traumatological pathology. Endomedullary block nailing has been representing the first choice surgical method in the treatment of this type of fractures for 15 years and the Gamma nail has become the most used means of synthesis worldwide. Although the nail has been modified over time in order to adapt to femoral anatomy even better, to increase its resistance to the mechanical stresses and to improve manipulation elements, and to make the surgical task easier in the introduction phase, as well as proximal and distal blockage and placement. In our work, we have been using the Gamma nail as gold standard in the surgical treatment of lateral femoral hip fractures for over 15 years, using all pre-existing versions. We present a comparison between the two surgical revision methods carried out in a 10 years period.
