Significance

The zaragozic acids (squalestatins) are fungal metabolites that display cholesterol-lowering activity and inhibition of farnesyl protein transferase. This approach to (+)-zaragozic acid C is noteworthy for the use of an Ireland-Claisen rearrangement to install two contiguous quaternary centers (C→E).
