Zusammenfassung

Neue Forschungsergebnisse zur Wirksamkeit der Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) als Prophylaktikum bei rezidivierenden Harnwegsinfekten, Helicobacter-pylori-Infektionen des oberen Gastrointestinaltrakts sowie bei Karies und parodontalen Erkrankungen werden vorgestellt. Proanthocyanidine der Cranberries hemmen die bakterielle Andockung an Gewebe in vitro. Auch nach oraler Aufnahme bleibt das Wirkprinzip im Urin von Probanden nachweisbar. Durch randomisierte klinische Studien ist die Prophylaxe von Harnwegsinfekten durch Cranberrysaft bei Frauen evidenzbasiert. Die hohe antioxidative Kapazität von Cranberryprodukten ist zusätzlich eindrucksvoll belegt.

Summary

The author presents new research findings on the efficacy of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) as a pharmaceutical agent in treating recurrent urinary tract infection, Helicobacter pylori infection of the upper gastrointestinal tract as well as caries and periodontal disease. In vitro, the proanthocyanidins in cranberries inhibit the docking of bacteria on tissues. The efficacy mechanism can be traced in the patient's urine following an oral intake of cranberry juice. As was shown in evidence based studies, cranberry juice leads to the prevention of urinary tract infection in women. The author also empirically verifies the high anti-oxidative capacity of cranberry products.
