Mehrere Studien in den zurückliegenden 30 Jahren haben die Wirkung psychosozialer Faktoren bei der Behandlung von Dysgnathien deutlich werden lassen. Die Behandlungsmotivation der Patienten, ihre Erwartungen an den Behandlungsverlauf und den Behandlungserfolg sowie auch ihre Persönlichkeitsstruktur scheinen von großer Bedeutung für das Behandlungsergebnis zu sein. Einige Befunde aus der Literatur sowie die Ergebnisse eigener Untersuchungen werden diskutiert. Die mit der Dysgnathiebehandlung befassten Kieferorthopäden und Kieferchirurgen sollten mit den psychosozialen Aspekten dieser Behandlung vertraut sein, um so die Grundlage für ein stabiles und lange währendes Arzt-Patienten-Verhältnis gewährleisten zu können.

Several studies of the last 3 decades have shown the effect of psychological factors in the treatment of malocclusion. The patients motivation for seeking treatment, their expectations concerning the process of treatment, and its success as well as the patients personality seem to be of great importance for the overall outcome. Some of the findings as described in the literature as well as the results of our own investigations are discussed. The orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon who are concerned with the treatment of malocclusion should give attention to the psychosocial implications of such treatment to provide the basis for the best interaction with their patients during a long lasting process of therapy.
