A one-pot and efficient preparation of aromatic nitriles from the corresponding aldehydes was accomplished by treatment with 2 M ammonia solution in 2-propanol, magnesium sulfate, and manganese dioxide in THF at room temperature. This method was found to be compatible with a variety of functionalities such as hydroxyl, ester, and amide.
