Lanthanide tris(perfluorobutanesulfonyl)methides, scandium and ytterbium complexes in particular, were synthesized and shown to be water-tolerant and extremely efficient Lewis acid catalysts for the Friedel-Crafts acylation, Diels-Alders reaction, and Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction.
