Dehydrative alkylation of alcohols with methyl phenylsulfonylacetate under modified Mitsunobu conditions followed by desulfonylation using magnesium affords two-carbon elongated methyl carboxylates in good to excellent yields. Diols and bromoalcohols furnish cycloalkylcarboxylates.
