Optically active oxo(salen)manganese(V) complexes were found to serve as chiral Lewis acid catalysts. Although oxo(salen)manganese(V) complexes are strong oxidizing agents, their oxygen atom transfer activity is suppressed at -78°C. For example, Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and α-bromoacrolein was promoted by optically active oxo(salen)manganese(V) complex (10) to give the corresponding adduct of 68% ee with high exo selectivity.
