A protocol for the indirect alkylation, via phenylsulfonylmethylation, of the unfunctionalized γ-carbon atom of a carboxylic acid chain was developed. The stereo- and the regiocontrol of the alkylation are secured by the use, as a key step, of an intramolecular carbenoid C-H insertion of an α-diazo-β-ketosulfone.
