A silicon mediated Pummerer reaction for the coupling of nucleoside bases to a tetrahydrothiophene ring is described. Thus, treatment of the required base with TMS-triflate and triethylamine in toluene followed by the addition of tetramethylene sulphoxide and catalytic ZnI2 gave the requisite coupled product in moderate to good yield.
