We report a highly diastereoselective synthesis of (3R,4S)-3-hydroxy-4-phenyl-2-azetidinone (11) using L-threonine as a chiral template. This compound has been utilized in the partial synthesis of taxol from 10-desacetyl baccatin III (2a).
