Binuclear nickel(II) complexes 3a and 5a were found to catalyze epoxidation of olefins (e.g., trans-stilbene) by dioxygen under Mukaiyama's conditions to give epoxides in fair to good yields. However, geometrical isomerization was observed for the epoxidation of some substrates, suggesting the intervention of radical species in the course of the reaction. Asymmetric induction by chiral catalyst 5a was not observed.
