Bis(η5-2,3,4,5-tetramethylphospholyl)bis(tetrahydrofuran)metal complexes [(η5-C4Me4P)2M(THF)2; M = Yb, Sm] were prepared, not only by reaction of K(C4Me4P) with YbI2(THF)2 or SmI2(THF)2 [similarly to the known synthesis of Cp* 2M from KCp* and MI2(THF)2], but also by direct oxidative addition of these lanthanides as metallic powders across the P-P bond of octamethyl-1,1′-biphospholyl, C4Me4P-PC4Me4, in THF at room temperature.
