Triorganothallium (TOT) compounds, prepared in situ by the addition of an organolithium or Grignard reagent to a diorganothallium, react smoothly with activated tertiary and secondary halides leading to the efficient formation of C-C bonds. Mixed dimethyl-alkynyl TOT reagents transfer chemoselectively their acetylenic ligand. The diorganothallium halide byproduct is recycled almost quantitatively.
