The 11-deoxyanthracycline skeleton of 4-deoxyaklavinone was constructed starting from 3,6-dimethoxy-2-methylbenzaldehyde and diallyl 2-pentenedioate by a regioselective intermolecular photoenolization reaction and a Pd(0)-mediated dealkoxycarbonylation-aromatization reaction.
