Vacuum thermolysis of readily available 4,4-dihalotetracyclo [6.2.1.02,7.03,5]undec-9-enes, prepared from the addition of dihalocarbenes to endo-tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]deca-3,8-diene under phase-transfer catalysis, affords 3-halocyclopentenes in high yield (70-80%).
