The palladium-catalyzed reaction of 2-butene-1,4-diol with aryl and 1-alkenyl halides under phase-transfer conditions affords 4-substituted 2-hydroxytetrahydrofurans, which are oxidized to 4-substituted 2(3H)-dihydrofuranones (γ-butyrolactones).
