The action of phosphoryl chloride and N-methylformanilide on activated acetic acids (X-CH2-COOH) or acetyl chlorides (X-CH2-CO-Cl), whereX = aryl, cyano, or methoxycarbonyl, yields N-methylquinolinium salts orquinolones in good yields.
