The importance of 1,5-dienes as natural products and the available synthetic routes to such compounds are discussed. The development of a new route to 1,5- and 1,6-cyclodecadienes and acyclic 1,5-dienes through solvolytic fragmentation of boronic acid derivatives is described with particular emphasis on the factors which control the outcome of such reactions.
