Ein wesentliches Ziel zur Vorbeugung und Behandlung von Karies und Parodontitis ist die Reduzierung oral-pathogener Bakterien. Die klassischen Schriften des Ayurveda liefern dafür interessante Ansätze, denn auf die Mundhygiene wird ein besonderes Augenmerk gelegt. Mittlerweile konnte für einige der beschriebenen Heilpflanzen und Mundpflegemaßnahmen auch der wissenschaftliche Nachweis zur Wirksamkeit erbracht werden. Somit lässt sich durch die Einbeziehung ayurvedischer Anwendungen die gängige Praxis sinnvoll ergänzen.
