Die operative Entfernung der meist altersbedingt (und seltener als Folge von z. B. Traumata oder Stoffwechselerkrankungen) getrübten Linse ist der häufigste invasive Eingriff in der Medizin in den Industrienationen. In Deutschland werden pro Jahr nach Schätzungen mehr als 700 000 Kataraktoperationen durchgeführt.
