Halitosis ist ein weit verbreitetes Leiden. In 85–90% der Fälle liegt die Ursache im oralen Bereich. Dabei zählen die Zusammensetzung der oralen Mikroflora, der Gesundheitszustand der Mundhöhle und die Qualität der Nahrung zu den wesentlichsten Einflussfaktoren. Nahrungsbestandteile beeinflussen nachweislich den Metabolismus oraler Bakterien, sodass bei länger bestehendem Mundgeruch neben den herkömmlichen Therapiemaßnahmen, zu denen die Verbesserung der Mundhygiene und die Behandlung oraler Erkrankungen zählen, auch Ernährungsinterventionen mit einbezogen werden sollten.
