Infectious Complications of Chronic Kidney Disease in the Developing World

Abstract

This review focuses on infections of pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the developing world. Published data on the epidemiology of infections occurring in children with CKD, specifically in low-income countries, are very limited. The infections discussed here are therefore a combination of those known to occur frequently in CKD in addition to those that commonly occur in children in developing countries. The latter include infections commonly seen in the author's clinical practice of CKD in a developing nation. This practice is a tertiary care center for pediatric nephrology in South India, one of the very few stand-alone pediatric nephrology departments providing CKD care including dialysis and transplantation in a developing nation. PubMed was searched for relevant articles using the following keywords: “CKD,” “dialysis” “infection,” “child” in addition to the keywords for each specific infection discussed here. In addition, where relevant, World Health Organization data and statistics were referred to for infections that are highly prevalent in developing nations.
