Tagesschläfrigkeit jedweder zugrundeliegenden Erkrankung führt zu Leistungseinbußen und einer vermehrten Unfallhäufigkeit und mehrt somit die Kosten im Gesundheitssystem. Das obstruktive Schlafapnoe-Syndrom ist eine der wesentlichen Krankheiten, bei denen eine gesteigerte Unfallhäufigkeit im Beruf, insbesondere auch bei Berufskraftfahrern, nachgewiesen ist. Tagesschläfrigkeit besitzt einen hohen prädiktiven Wert für das Auftreten von Unfällen. Durch eine adäquate CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure)-Therapie kann die Unfallhäufigkeit signifikant reduziert werden.

Daytime sleepiness of any provenience leads to impairment of daytime performance and an increased accident rate. The consequences are an increase of illness- and accident-related costs in health system. OSAS is one of the major reasons for accidents at the working place and while driving a car especially in professional drivers. Accident frequency in OSAS can be significantly reduced by adequate CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure)-therapy.
