Zusammenfassung

Demografische Veränderungen führen zu einer steigenden Zahl älterer Menschen und es gibt vermehrte Anzeichen dafür, dass eine Verbindung zwischen Vitaminstatus und der Entwicklung von nichtübertragbaren Krankheiten besteht. Daten von Ernährungserhebungen deuten außerdem darauf hin, dass auch in wohlhabenden westlichen Ländern eine ungenügende Aufnahme von Vitaminen verbreitet ist. Darüber hinaus erfordern die physiologischen Veränderungen des Alterungsprozesses eine Ernährung mit höherer Nährstoffdichte, welche nur selten erreicht werden kann. Um diese Lücke zwischen der effektiven Vitaminzufuhr und den Empfehlungen zu schließen, sind angereicherte Lebensmittel sowie Nahrungsergänzungsmittel eine pragmatische und sinnvolle Lösung.
