Microwave-Assisted Thionation of Amides Using a Solid-Supported P2S5

Significance

A novel method for thionation of amides using a solid-supported phosphorus pentasulfide (P2S5/Al2O3) reagent under microwave irradiation was described. Thionation of primary, secondary, and tertiary amides (1a-j: 0.75 mmol) with P2S5/Al2O3 (P2S5: 0.90 mmol) was carried out under microwave irradiation to give the corresponding thioamides (2a-j) in 76-92% isolated yield. In the 7.5 mmol scale reaction, thiobenz­amide (2a) was also obtained in 98% yield.
