Significance

The authors have previously developed a remarkably effective planar chiral PIP catal­yst for the catalytic kinetic resolution of bulky aryl­alkyl carbinols to afford the corresponding esters with high enantioselectivity (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 17041). In the present work they report the application of this system to bulky (hetero)-arylalkyl carbinols affording alcohols in near ideal conversions with excellent enantioselectivities.
