Summary

In this article a short overview of the treatment of horses suffering from inflammatory airway disease or recurrent airway obstruction is presented. In our opinion, the change of the animal environment is of paramount importance in treatment of these horses. The elimination of irritating substances like dust, ammoniacal gas and endotoxines in patients' environment leads to improvement of clinical signs in most cases; the use of additional medical treatment including corticosteroids (dexamethasone, prednisolone, fluticasone) and bronchodilators (β2-Agonists like clenbuterol, salmeterol) is indicated for more severe cases. The efficacy of mucolytic drugs and of “hyperinfusion therapy” on the other hand, is questionable.
