Significance

Fullerene (1) was converted into the 1,2-dihydromethano[60]fullerene 4 in a scalable three-step synthesis. This new high-yielding and efficient route involves the addition of silylmethylmagnesium chloride followed by the oxidation of the anionic intermediate 3. The approach is general, and several examples using substituted [60]fullerenes and [70]fullerene are described.
