Significance

Herein, a one-pot preparation of polystyrene-supported (dichloroiodo)benzene (PS-DCIB) from polystyrene, iodine, and sodium hypochlorite (a commercial bleach) is described. The chlorination of alkenes, arenes, and a 1,3-di-ketone as well as the oxidation of alcohols with a stoichiometric amount of PS-DCIB were carried out to give the corresponding chloro compounds (72-85% yield) and carbonyl compounds (20-92% yield), respectively.
