Significance

The polymer based on squaramide 1 shows cooperative and selective binding of H2PO4 - in a competitive medium. Without preorganized binding sites for H2PO4 -, the polymer is postulated to form aggregates in the presence of the anion. The authors demonstrate that the polymer 1 is approximately four times more sensitive to H2PO4 - than the control receptor 2.
