Mono-N-Alkylation of Anilines with R3N Using Pd/C under Microwave Irradiation

Significance

Reactions of anilines 1 with tertiary amines 2 were carried out in the presence of Pd/C under microwave irradiation to give N-alkyl anilines 3 in up to 95% yield (17 examples). In the reaction of aniline 1a with tripropylamine 2a, the catalyst was recovered by simple filtration and reused four times without significant loss of its catalytic activity (1st reuse: 90% yield, 4th reuse: 92% yield). ICP-MS analysis showed a trace amount of palladium leaching after the reaction.
