Significance

In this paper, the authors report a protocol that allows the synthesis of highly optically active phosphonates via direct rhodium asymmetric hydrogenation of 3-aryl-4-phosphonobutenoates with a modified P-stereogenic ­BoPhoz-type ligand. Various substituents on the aromatic ring are well tolerated and the enantio­selectivities as well as yields are very high.
