Significance

Magnetic nanoparticle (MNP), Fe3O4 coated with SiO2-supported (S)-diphenylprolinol trimethylsilyl ether 7 (Jørgensen-Hayashi catalyst), was prepared and applied to the asymmetric Michael addition. The Michael addition of various aliphatic aldehydes with substituted aromatic nitroalkenes was carried out in water with 7 to give the corresponding adducts in up to 96% yield with 75-90% ee.
