Palladium Nanoparticles in Silica Hollow Spheres with Mesoporous Walls

Significance

Pd@meso-SiO2 nanoreactor 4, where palladium nanoparticles were installed in silica hollow sphere with mesoporous walls, was developed and applied in the Suzuki coupling. Thus, 4 was prepared via loading of palladium nanoparticles on carbon nanosphere 1, followed by treatment with TEOS and CTAB, and calcination (three steps). Catalyst 4 was used in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of 5a-d and 6a-c to ­afford the corresponding biphenyls 7aa-dc in 50-99% yields (6 examples).
