Significance

In this paper the authors describe the preparation of a family of chiral building blocks via enantioselective Henry reaction of aldehydes with 4-nitrobutyrate. The copper complex of ligand 1 furnished a number of products with up to 99% yields, dr up to 85:15 and 49-96% ee. Those adducts were then converted into γ-lactams, δ-lactones and 5-hydroxy-5-phenyllevulinic acid methyl ester.
