Pd/C-Catalyzed Oxidation of 1,2-Diarylalkynes with DMSO and O2

Significance

Pd/C-catalyzed oxidation of 1,2-­diarylalkynes with dimethyl sulfoxide and O2 as dual oxidants gave the corresponding benzil derivatives 2a-k in 41-98% yield. The oxidation of 1a hardly proceeded in toluene and N,N-dimethyl­acetamide. The oxidation of 1a under an argon ­atmosphere was strongly suppressed even in DMSO (1a/2a = 71:29, ¹H NMR analysis).
