Significance

The molecular shuttle 1 is reported wherein the reversible translocation of a tetra­amide macrocycle (blue) along a thread is controlled by a Mitsunobu reaction. The addition of ­iodosobenzene diacetate to reoxidize 2 back to 1 not only demonstrates the organocatalytic function of the molecule, but also allows the ring to be continuously shuttled between the two binding sites (red/green) of the rotaxane.
