New Ligands for Asymmetric Iridium-Catalyzed Hydrogenation of Alkenes

Significance

The authors designed a new library of phosphite-oxazole/thiazole ligands, which were successfully used in the highly enantioselective ­iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of alkenes, including highly unfunctionalized substrates. Advantages of oxazole/thiazole and phosphite moieties are nicely combined: The new ligands are more stable than oxazoline analogues, less prone to oxidation compared to phosphines and phosphinites, and they can be accessed via simpler synthetic pathways. The ligand structure provides wide opportunities for tuning.
