Introduction

There are undoubtedly two major landmarks in the development of gas chromatography, the first the origination by Martin and James of gas/liquid chromatography in 1952 and the second, the almost simultaneous appearance of capillary columns and ionization detectors some five years later. Both led to an explosion of new activity surprisingly enough in the former case with an induction period of almost two years.
