Abstract

The alkaloids produced by Cestrum nocturnum and Cestrum diurnum were examined. The alkaloids were identified by means of infrared and mass spectrometry as well as by gas and thin–layer chromatography. Where sufficient material was available, derivatives were made. The following alkaloids were identified in C. nocturnum: nicotine, nornicotine, cotinine and myosmine, while nicotine and nornicotine were found in C. diurnum. The role that these compounds play in the toxicity attributed to these species of Cestrum ist discussed.
