Abstract

A highly sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of nicotine has been carried out. By using 0.1 % methyl orange solution nicotine could be quantitatively extracted at pH 4.50. The 1:1 nicotine-methyl orange coupled compound was extracted by chloroform and measured at 415 nm. The chloroortnic extract was stable and conform Beer's law up to 0.500 mg of nicotine.

The application of the method to the assay of crude drugs was described.
