Dear readers, colleagues, and friends of Endoscopy,

It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I assume the role of Editor-in-Chief of this journal. It is an honor to lead a journal that plays such a pivotal role in advancing endoscopy.

Over the years, our journal’s impact factor has increased steadily, making Endoscopy the leading journal in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy. This achievement reflects the dedication of our contributors and the relevance of the research we publish but also results from the dedication of our board of Co-Editors under the leadership of Peter Siersema, who has served as Editor-in-Chief over the past 12.5 years. A big and well-deserved thank you to him and his team!

As we look to the future, I would like to share a few thoughts on the path we will take together.

Our collaboration with the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy is instrumental in this journey. The growth in ESGE’s membership and the critical involvement of its members has enriched our journal’s content and impact. The high-quality ESGE guidelines published in our journal are a testament to this collaboration. Furthermore, initiatives, such as the establishment of a joint ESGE/Endoscopy AI working group, exemplify our joint commitment to address future challenges and opportunities in endoscopy. Our journal’s success is also significantly driven by contributions from outside ESGE. Here, Japan holds a special place in my heart. I have learned my appreciation for endoscopic image quality and endoscopic elegance from my interactions with Japanese masters and friends, and I believe it is vital for our journal to keep looking to the East for new developments and insights. In doing so, we will focus on unlocking growth markets such as China and India, not only by encouraging the submission of high-quality endoscopic studies from these regions but also by offering prepublication research support through our journal.

At the same time, we must not lose sight of the West. Many of the innovative endoscopic therapeutic technologies find their roots in North America, driven by the entrepreneurship of their leading endoscopists and supported by venture capital funding. Much of my personal scientific work in endoscopy originated from this boiling pot of endoscopic innovation, guided by the mentorship of senior endoscopists and friends in North America. It is important to note, however, that Endoscopy does not have the penetration in North America that its stature deserves, whereas many endoscopists in Europe and beyond, still look upon the US as the Valhalla for publishing their endoscopic research. I have been part of this misconception. I realize now that our modesty here is as much misplaced as it is unjustified. It is time for researchers worldwide to recognize and embrace the excellence of their work and look upon Endoscopy as the most appropriate and leading journal in the field of endoscopy. Trust me, we will make your research work and get it the impact it deserves. With the new editorial board we are working on a social media strategy that will get your scientific work there where it matters: into the endoscopy rooms of the world.

The upcoming years will bring spectacular changes to our field, driven by innovations in artificial intelligence and new therapeutic developments in endoscopy. Areas such as bariatric and metabolic endoscopy, robotics in endoscopy, regenerative endoscopy, and third-space interventions are set to revolutionize our practice. It is imperative that our journal remains at the forefront of these advancements, providing our readers with the latest research and insights that will shape the future of patient care. The new composition of our board of Co-Editors and their networks, ensures that we will have access to these exciting new developments.

I encourage our readers, researchers, and clinicians to actively contribute to our journal. Your voices, insights, and research are essential in strengthening our community. In the next year, our journal will also be more proactive in showing you how exciting the field of endoscopy is: join us on our social media platforms or, even better, share our work with others.

As we embark on this exciting new phase, I look forward to meeting you at conferences, symposia, and through our publications. Together, we can shape the future of endoscopy and continue to elevate the standards of patient care and research.
