Cu-catalyzed selective Oxygenation of Aryl C‒H Bonds with O2 and MnO2 as Terminal Oxidants

Herein, We present efficient methods for the copper-catalyzed selective oxidation of aromatic C-H bonds under O2 or/and MnO2 conditions. A range of 2-arylpyridines and 2-arylpyrimidines was used for the synthesis of controlled mono/di acetoxylative products in moderate to good yields (29-99%) in the presence of 20 mol% CuO(nano), O2 with HOAc/Ac2O as an acetoxy source and solvent. The mono selective hydroxylation of C-H bonds was also achieved with Cu(OAc)2 as the catalyst. For the reaction mechanism, the trivalent copper intermediate might be involved in the catalytic cycle.
