For a better understanding of the experimental observations as summarized in Scheme 8, we asked the groups of J. A. Murphy and T. Tuttle (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow) to perform high-level DFT calculations including counterions and solvents. Their computational results support the conclusion that the ring closure can proceed by an ionic cyclization (Scheme 9); Murphy JA.
