In this case, I found my way to the curative remedy by searching ReferenceWorks for a metaphor (phoenix) that seemed to draw the important elements of the case together. The search led me to Todd Rowe's proving of Cathartes aura. Internet searches of myth and natural history also provided confirmatory information.
