Empowering Doctors in Balint Groups[1]

Abstract

The concept of empowerment is well known to social scientists but is less used in the health area, especially by doctors. This article describes empowerment among doctors attending Balint groups in the relationship with their patients, their colleagues and the system in which they work. This paper furthermore describes how the use of the concept of empowerment can help to engage health decision-makers to support the use of Balint groups in their settings.

Zusammenfassung

Das Konzept „empowerment” (Übertragung von Verantwortung auf Untergebene) ist in Kreisen von Sozialwissenschaftlern wohl bekannt, wird aber weniger im Gesundheitswesen gebraucht, speziell von Ärzten. Dieser Artikel schildert die „Bevollmächtigung” bei Ärzten, die an Balintgruppen teilnehmen, in ihrer Beziehung mit ihren Patienten, ihren Kollegen und sowie dem System in welchem sie tätig sind. Außerdem beschreibt er wie die Nutzung des Konzepts „Bevollmächtigung” helfen kann um die entscheidenden Autoritäten des Gesundheitswesen darin zu überzeugen, dass sie den Gebrauch von Balintgruppen in ihrer Umgebung stützen.
