The present review describes basic theories of pain symptoms and genesis concerning exposed root surfaces. Generally accepted methods of desensitisation with topical applications are discussed and laser applications are described. Usually topical applications have temporary effects, so they have to be applied repeatedly and periodically. Laser applications can cause nerve analgesia and morphological changes of the dentinal structure. Clinical studies supply the evidence of different laser applications concerning effectiveness and safety. Actually the combined application of laser light and topical substances are of great interest, promising long term efficacy.
